“try the spirits to see if they are of GOD”

It is written” beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of GOD, because many false prophets are gone out into the world. Hereby ye know the SPIRIT of GOD : every Spirit that confesses that JESUS CHRIST is come in the flesh is of GOD. And every spirit that confesses not that JESUS CHRIST is come in the flesh is not of GOD,and this [that confesses NOT JESUS] is the spirit of anti-CHRIST; whereof ye have heard that it should come,and even now is already in the world. Ye are of GOD little children, and have overcome them, because greater is HE that is in you, than he that is in the world.” I John 4: 1- 4
The italics thingamajig just stopped working! Does anything ever work for very long if a person is defying the devil? Or teaching how to recognize the devil? But not to worry, the sentence above says that GOD is greater than the devil and I am overcoming the devil in all of my works.
